Great Sheets!

I admit it.  I am a sheet snob.  I’m not really proud of it, but I refuse to apologise for it.

In most areas of my life I’m not a snob.  I wouldn’t dress in Chanel head-to-toe even if I could afford it — I think it’s much cooler to pair a little something from your favorite designer with a little something from J. Crew.  I love dive restaurants, and I’m not adverse to the occasional seedy hotel — as long as they have good sheets.  I stayed in a hotel in Vietnam with cockroaches so big I thought they were my son’s matchstick cars, but they had incredible sheets — go figure!

“You spend about a third of your life in bed, so make it good,” is my motto. One of my big splurges (in my otherwise green existence) is to stay in a hotel and have fresh sheets every night.  Some hotels’ bedding — La Valencia in La Jolla, the Montage in Los Angeles, and any Oberoi hotel, but especially the one in Udaipur, India, —  makes you never want to leave your room.  It was in India that I discovered my “perfect” bed:  Instead of a bottom sheet they used just a feather bed with a very high thread count cover on it, and no top sheet; just a fluffy comforter with a great duvet — it was like skinny dipping, but in bed.
