WARNING: What you are about to read contains spoilers for the movie “Limitless.” As a mother there are certain movies that I want my kids to see. For me, these movies convey a message or warning that is more easily accepted coming from a cool actor rather than a nagging mother. Two good examples are Midnight Express (don’t do drugs, and don’t even go near drugs in a foreign country), and 127 Hours (always let Read More…
I had to go to the post office this morning to mail a package to my son who is across the country attending college — I use the word attending loosely, very loosely. It’s March and temperatures in Pennsylvania have broken fifty degrees so he’s ready for shorts and t-shirts. That is, more shorts and t-shirts. He has plenty of the loose-fitting athletic shorts and lacrosse emblazoned t-shirts that he loves so well in his Read More…
I admit it. I am a sheet snob. I’m not really proud of it, but I refuse to apologise for it. In most areas of my life I’m not a snob. I wouldn’t dress in Chanel head-to-toe even if I could afford it — I think it’s much cooler to pair a little something from your favorite designer with a little something from J. Crew. I love dive restaurants, and I’m not adverse to the Read More…
First Lady Michelle Obama introduces her healthy kids initiative today. Her campaign to fight childhood obesity, if successful, could drive down health-care costs in this country by billions of dollars a year. Nearly one third of children in America are overweight or obese. In the Latino and African American communities this number jumps to almost half. As these children grow up, they stand an increased chance of developing diabetes, heart disease, and joint problems, plus Read More…
My daughter (age 15 years and 11 months) got her driver’s permit last week. She could have gotten it five months ago when she turned fifteen and a half, but she put it off. Putting off getting her permit means she puts off getting her driver’s license for five months. If she puts off getting her driver’s license can you imagine what it’s like getting her to do her homework or clean her room? I Read More…
I left San Francisco late morning Thursday and 24 hours later, on Friday night local time, arrived in Delhi. About an hour before landing, I struck up a conversation with a pilot deadheading to India. He told me that it was tricky landing in Delhi on Friday because Delhi’s “fog” problem was complicated by smoke from the crematorium. He informed me they cremated their dead on Thursdays and the crematorium was near the airport. This Read More…
A couple of Tuesdays ago I wrote on palliative care—the palliative care that people need at the end of their lives to help them die with dignity. This week–another kind of palliative care. Palliative is defined as: relieving pain or alleviating a problem without dealing with the underlying cause. I’ve always thought of palliative like a band-aide of sorts; it covers what we don’t want to see, while we wait for it to go away. Read More…
There’s been a lot of talk of civility in the past few weeks. Congressman Joe Wilson called President Obama a liar during a joint session of congress. Rapper Kanye West jumped onstage and ripped the microphone from singer Taylor Swift as she was giving an acceptance speech at the MTV awards. And from town hall meetings to ostensibly respectable members of the press, partisan bickering is nastier than ever. Joe Wilson, the congressman from South Read More…
It feels like fall today. The air is crisp. But really, in San Francisco that means nothing, our “crispest” days can be in the middle of summer. It’s the light quality that let’s me know it’s fall. There’s a warm glow, a slight sepia coloring the world. Fall is bittersweet. Fall is the beginning and the end: The beginning of an exciting new school- year and the end of the halcyon days of summer. You Read More…
Several weeks ago South Carolina’s governor, Mark Sanford, got caught lying about his whereabouts. He told his staff that he was hiking the Appalachia Trail and would be incommunicado. Didn’t you know right away that this story would end with another woman? Of course you did. Even if politicians hadn’t been falling left and right to their carnal proclivities you would have known, wouldn’t you? The thing that surprised me about the story was that Read More…
